Mancomunidad del Este
The Commonwealth of Municipalities of the East (MEM) is an entity created for the establishment and joint administration of municipal services for the management, treatment and disposal of urban waste generated in the Henares corridor of the Community of Madrid. Its purpose is to provide management services for solid urban waste (SUW) generated in the municipalities of the municipalities that make up the Commonwealth, with the main purpose of protecting the environment, promoting recycling and the use of such waste through the correct valorization of resources. MEM is the result of the application of the management model that the Community of Madrid has foreseen in its Waste Strategy, as it considers that the municipalities of Madrid must acquire a greater role in waste management and as they are responsible, in accordance with the regulations, for assuming the functions of waste management. The MEM is designing a strategy for the implementation of new technologies that will enable it to collaborate with the rest of the Community of Madrid in achieving the different objectives set out in the European Waste Framework. At present, there are 31 municipalities that make up the MEM, with a total of 750,000 inhabitants.
